Professional football team based in Catalonia, Spain – RCD Espanyol will allow fans to buy match tickets, merchandise products, food and drinks using several cryptocurrencies. The product will be made available when La Liga starts next season (August 2022).
Digital assets and the soccer industry have formed a relatively strong relationship over the past few months. Many clubs from around the world have announced partnerships with crypto companies, introduced exchanges as sponsors or accepted the asset class as a payment method.
However, Spain’s top football league – La Liga has yet to participate much in this field. According to a recent press release, this trend is about to change this summer when RCD Espanyol will allow fans to buy tickets, food and drinks during matches and merchandise with Bitcoin, Ethereum and other digital assets.
Specifically, the club has partnered with Crypto Snack, a financial app based in Barcelona and Estonia. This unit has a native iGaming token, called SNACK, which is listed on many major exchanges. The property will be added to the offer, allowing fans to use it as a means of payment.
Mao Ye Wu, CEO of RCD Espanyol believes the partnership will bring “huge advantages both on and off the pitch“, giving football supporters an extra chance to attend a match.
“With this step, we become pioneers in a field that is seen as the future,” he emphasized.
For his part, Crypto Snack CEO Stuart Morrison said his company is honored to partner with one of the most famous football clubs in Spain. He thinks the effort will give Espanyol fans a “fun, productive way to support their team through the use of SNACK and other cryptocurrencies.”
Another soccer giant that allows fans to buy tickets for matches with cryptocurrency is Tigres Mexico. To make this happen, the team has partnered with Latin American digital asset exchange – Bitso.
Daniel Vogel, co-founder and CEO of the platform argues that the partnership with Tigres will increase the daily employment of the cryptocurrency during sporting events, “thus expanding its use as a payment method for any kind of event.”
The president of the football club, Mauricio Culebro Galván hinted that this may not be the last crypto adoption effort initiated by the team:
“Tigres continues to look to the future and new initiatives will certainly accompany Bitso to continue to offer greater services.”
